Occupational Safety and Health
The Occupational Safety and Health Department of the Finnish Supervisory Agency acts as the occupational safety and health authority throughout Finland. The aim of occupational safety and health supervision is to ensure that work in Finland is safe, healthy and fair. Occupational safety and health inspections are our most important supervisory tool, and we carry out about 20,000 such inspections at workplaces every year.
We provide advice and guidance on health and safety at work and on terms of employment. We encourage workplaces to engage in self-initiated preventive occupational safety and health work. The Occupational Safety and Health Department’s telephone service and website Tyosuojelu.fi provide both employers and employees with information and answers.
Occupational safety and health inspectors supervise compliance with more than one hundred acts and decrees.
We also process permit and licence applications and notifications for work that is subject to statutory restrictions or notification obligations. Our tasks include investigating the causes of serious occupational accidents, occupational diseases and work-related diseases and taking action to prevent them. Our aim is also to ensure that the machinery, tools, personal protective equipment and other technical equipment used in the work meet the requirements set for them. If we suspect an employment offence at a workplace we supervise, we report the matter to the police.
Our operations are steered by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. We also cooperate closely with other authorities and with partners such as employer and employee organisations.
