General Health Protection

Health protection comprises the protection of the health of the population and the individual with measures such as the monitoring and examination of the healthiness of household and swimming waters and indoor conditions. Decision-making related to the healthy living environment must take into account the perspective and expertise of health protection.

The Finnish Supervisory Agency guides and supervises health protection, evaluates municipal health protection control plans and monitors their implementation. Under the Health Protection Act, municipal enforcement units are responsible for regular supervision , for investigating suspected health hazards, and for providing guidance and advice on health protection.

The national health protection enforcement programme prepared by the Finnish Supervisory Agency steers the enforcement of municipal health protection. The objective of the programme is to harmonise enforcement practices at the national level and to ensure a healthy living environment for people through focus areas that guide enforcement. The enforcement programme is at the bottom of this page
