Information on Extended Producer Responsibility

Extended Producer Responsibility applies to approximately 50,000 Finnish manufacturers, importers and packers as well as distance sellers. Extended Producer Responsibility for waste management makes recycling efficient and easy.  The aim is to prevent the generation of waste and promote circular economy.

What is Extended Producer Responsibility?

Extended Producer Responsibility means that manufacturers, importers, distance sellers, and packers of certain products have a statutory obligation to arrange the waste management of their products when the products reach the end of their life.

Extended Producer Responsibility promotes a circular economy by enabling raw materials to be returned to circulation and reducing the amount of waste.

  1. Thanks to Extended Producer Responsibility, the recycling and waste management of products are free of charge for consumers.
  2. Companies subject to Extended Producer Responsibility are responsible for the waste management of their products when they are no longer in use.
  3. A nationwide collection network has been established for products that have been taken out of use.

Extended Producer Responsibility is a legal obligation

The management of Extended Producer Responsibility is based on the Waste Act. Failure to do so can result in a substantial fine for the company. The Finnish Supervisory Agency oversees and supervises the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility nationwide.

Extended Producer Responsibility applies to manufacturers, importers, distance sellers and packers of certain products. Companies must manage Extended Producer Responsibility for the following products:

  • Batteries and accumulators (incl. inside vehicles and electrical equipment)
  • Vehicles
  • Packaging
  • Paper and paper products
  • Tyres
  • Electrical and electronic equipment
  • Certain single-use plastic products (SUP)
  • Fishing gear containing plastic (SUP)

Extended Producer Responsibility is easy to manage

The easiest way to manage Extended Producer Responsibility is to join a producer organisation. Producer organisations carry out the legal obligations on behalf of the company:

  • collection, transport, waste management and recycling of discarded products
  • reporting monitoring data to the supervisory authority on an annual basis
  • and ensuring that recycling targets are met.
